The Mangalorean Catholic community carries a heritage that blends deep Catholic faith with warm coastal-Konkani custom. Here is where those stories are gathered.

Sannas, sorpotel, pork bafat, vorn and the sweets our grandmothers made — a recipe of the week, always.

One family, one wedding

From the engagement to the feast

A single Mangalorean Catholic wedding, told in photographs — the engagement, the Roce, the church nuptials and the red Sado.

“Roce is Konkani for coconut milk — the blessing that begins a new life.”

The heart of the wedding

The Roce ceremony

Held the evening before the wedding, close family and friends anoint the bride and groom with freshly pressed coconut milk — a ritual of purification and the start of a new life.

The women sing voviyos, playful folk verses that gently tease the couple, while the Laudate psalm invokes blessings and protection. The evening drifts into music, dancing and celebration late into the night.

Recipe of the week

Sannas — the pillowy steamed rice cakes

Soft, faintly sweet and slightly tangy from toddy or yeast, sannas are the perfect partner to a rich pork bafat or mutton curry at any Mangalorean feast.
